Beef and Broccoli Stir-fry is a classic dish that captures the essence of Chinese takeout favorites with its tender beef slices and crisp broccoli florets coated in a savory sauce. Known for its perfect balance of umami flavors and vibrant textures, this dish is both hearty and quick to prepare—ideal for a busy weeknight dinner or a casual gathering with friends.

This dish has roots in Cantonese cuisine, where stir-frying is a fundamental technique that preserves the freshness and crunch of vegetables while infusing meats with rich flavors. Its popularity soared worldwide thanks to its ability to deliver restaurant-quality taste at home, making beef and broccoli a staple in Asian-inspired cooking. Whether you're craving comfort food or seeking an impressive yet simple meal, this stir-fry delivers on all fronts.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Add the sliced beef and marinate for 10-15 minutes.

  2. 2

Meanwhile, blanch the broccoli in boiling water for 2 minutes until bright green and slightly tender. Drain and set aside.

  3. 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry until browned, about 2-3 minutes. Remove beef from the pan and set aside.

  4. 4

In the same pan, add another tablespoon of oil if needed. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

  5. 5

Add the broccoli to the pan and stir-fry for another 2 minutes, allowing it to soak up the flavors.

  6. 6

Return the beef to the pan. Pour in the beef broth or water, and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.

  7. 7

If using, drizzle with sesame oil and rice vinegar for extra flavor. Taste and adjust with salt, pepper, or sugar as desired.

  8. 8

Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds or chopped green onions if desired.
