Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich that elevates simple ingredients into a decadently delicious treat. Crispy toasted bread, savory ham, and melted cheese come together to create a comforting yet refined dish perfect for any occasion, from brunch to casual gatherings.
This beloved French concoction dates back to the early 20th century, originating in Parisian cafes. Its name translates to 'Mister Crunch,' hinting at its satisfyingly crispy exterior and gooey interior. Often topped with a creamy béchamel sauce before baking, the Croque Monsieur has become a staple of French cuisine, celebrated worldwide for its rich flavor and satisfying texture.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of good-quality sliced bread
- 4 slices of ham (preferably Parisian or Black Forest)
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Dijon mustard (optional for spread)
- Parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 2
In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- 3
Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens.
- 4
Add nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the béchamel sauce. Remove from heat and set aside.
- 5
Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on one side of each bread slice (optional).
- 6
Assemble the sandwiches by placing ham and grated cheese between two slices of bread, with the mustard side facing inward if used.
- 7
In a skillet, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Toast the assembled sandwiches until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- 8
Place the toasted sandwiches in a baking dish, then spoon the béchamel sauce evenly over the top.
- 9
Sprinkle additional cheese on top for a gratin-like finish.
- 10
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, until bubbly and golden.
- 11
Garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.
