Wonton Soup is a classic Chinese comfort food that combines delicate, chewy wontons filled with savory meat, served in a fragrant broth. Its harmonious blend of textures and flavors makes it a perfect starter or main dish, whether on a cozy evening at home or at a festive gathering. The warm, flavorful broth and tender wontons create an inviting experience with every spoonful.

Originating from the southern regions of China, wonton soup has a history dating back centuries. The name 'wonton' is believed to derive from the Cantonese word 'ngtawn,' meaning 'swallow,' inspired by the shape of the dumplings. Over time, this dish gained worldwide popularity, celebrated for its comforting qualities and customizable ingredients, making it a beloved staple in Chinese cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground pork or shrimp
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped scallions
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 package (around 20-30 pieces) wonton wrappers
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1-inch piece ginger, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped cilantro or scallions for garnish
  • Optional: sliced mushrooms or bok choy

Instructions

  1. 1

In a bowl, combine ground pork or shrimp, chopped scallions, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to form the filling.

  2. 2

Place a wonton wrapper in the palm of your hand. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of filling into the center of the wrapper.

  3. 3

Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little water, then fold it into a triangle or bring the corners together to form a pouch, sealing well.

  4. 4

Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers.

  5. 5

In a large pot, bring chicken broth, water, sliced ginger, and a pinch of salt to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer.

  6. 6

Add the prepared wontons to the simmering broth, ensuring they are fully submerged.

  7. 7

Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the wontons float to the surface and are cooked through.

  8. 8

Remove the ginger slices before serving. Taste the broth and adjust seasoning if needed.

  9. 9

Ladle the wontons and broth into bowls. Garnish with chopped cilantro or scallions and optional vegetables if desired.

  10. 10

Serve hot and enjoy this comforting Wonton Soup.
